VPN vs proxy

VPNs and proxies can both route traffic through another system, but they differ in how broadly they operate, how they handle encryption, and what applications they cover.

Overview

A proxy is an intermediary for traffic that has been configured to use it, while a VPN commonly creates a network-level tunnel that can carry traffic from many applications on the device. Neither technology automatically makes a user anonymous, and the provider operating the intermediary can become an important trust point.

Coverage is the main architectural difference

A browser configured to use a web proxy can send that browser traffic through the proxy while other applications continue normally. A device VPN can route a much broader set of traffic through a protected tunnel depending on the operating system and VPN configuration.

Privacy depends on the operator and configuration

Moving traffic to another intermediary changes who can observe or control parts of the connection. HTTPS still matters, DNS behavior matters, and a VPN or proxy provider can have visibility into metadata or traffic that is not otherwise end-to-end encrypted.
