What dashboard warning lights mean
Dashboard warning lights communicate different levels of urgency, so identify the symbol and vehicle guidance before continuing to drive or clearing the alert.

Overview
Modern vehicles use indicators for engine, braking, charging, tire pressure, temperature, airbag, oil pressure, and many other systems. Color can suggest urgency, but the exact meaning is vehicle-specific. The owner's manual is the primary reference for symbols and required action.
Identify the symbol exactly
Do not rely on memory when several dashboard icons look similar. Note the color, text, whether the light is flashing or steady, and any changes in vehicle behavior, then check the manufacturer description for that model.
Do not erase the symptom first
Disconnecting the battery or clearing fault codes can remove useful diagnostic information without correcting the cause. If a warning indicates possible loss of braking, lubrication, cooling, steering, or another safety-critical function, stop driving as directed by the manufacturer.
