Overview
Portable air cleaners can reduce some airborne pollutants when the device uses an appropriate technology and moves enough treated air for the room. Room size matters because the same purifier produces fewer effective air changes in a larger space. Particle filtration, gas adsorption, noise, filter cost, and placement are separate considerations, while removing or reducing the pollution source remains more effective than relying on filtration alone when source control is possible.
Size for useful airflow
Compare the purifier's documented clean-air delivery or room-size guidance with the actual space and the pollutant you want to reduce. A unit that is adequate in a bedroom may be undersized in an open living area. Running a suitably sized unit at a tolerable noise level is often more useful than owning a larger unit that is rarely used because it is too loud.
Match the treatment to the pollutant
Mechanical filters target airborne particles, while gases and odors require different media and enough adsorbent to matter. Avoid treating ozone-generating devices as ordinary filtration. Also reduce the pollutant source and use appropriate ventilation where practical, because an air cleaner cannot correct every indoor-air problem.
