How to delete a Facebook account
Facebook account deletion is a permanent-account action managed through Meta account settings and is different from temporary deactivation.
At a glance
- Temporary option
- Deactivate account
- Permanent option
- Delete account
Overview
Removing the Facebook app from a device does not delete the account. Meta provides controls for deactivation and deletion through account settings and Accounts Center. Deactivation is intended to be reversible, while deletion begins the process of permanently removing the account and content subject to Meta’s stated processing rules.
Confirm the action before proceeding
Meta can link several profiles and services through Accounts Center, so verify that the intended Facebook profile is selected. Read the deletion notice and timing information shown in the current interface because the exact process and recovery window can change.
Download information if needed
Before requesting deletion, consider exporting photos, posts, and other information you want to retain. Also review services or logins that depend on the Facebook account so deleting it does not unexpectedly remove access to another product or identity flow.
