How to pack a carry-on efficiently
Pack a carry-on around security rules, airline size limits, medication and document access, lithium-battery rules, and the items you actually need during transit.
At a glance
- Two rule sets
- Airline baggage policy and security screening rules are separate
- Lithium batteries
- Spare lithium batteries and power banks generally belong in carry-on baggage
Overview
A good carry-on separates items needed during the journey from things that can remain packed. Airline baggage dimensions and fees are separate from security restrictions, and lithium batteries, liquids, medications, tools, and sharp objects have their own rules. Check both the airline and security authority before departure.
Pack for access
Keep identification, boarding information, medication, valuables, charging cables, and one useful clothing layer easy to reach. Place liquids and electronics so they can be removed quickly when screening rules require it.
Check restricted items
Review current TSA guidance for liquids, tools, food, batteries, and special items, then separately confirm the airline's dimensions and weight limits. Rules can differ internationally or by carrier.
