How to prepare for a job interview
Prepare for an interview by understanding the role, matching requirements to real examples, practicing concise answers, and preparing questions that reveal what the job is actually like.
At a glance
- Best input
- The real job description
- Useful preparation
- Concrete examples from your actual experience
Overview
Interview preparation is more effective when it is tied to the actual job description. Instead of memorizing generic answers, identify the employer's recurring requirements and choose specific experiences that demonstrate those skills. Practice speaking the examples aloud so they remain clear under pressure.
Map requirements to evidence
For each major responsibility, choose a truthful example showing the situation, your action, and the result. Prepare a short explanation of gaps or transitions without overexplaining unrelated details.
Evaluate the employer too
Prepare questions about training, schedule, daily duties, performance expectations, team structure, safety, advancement, and next steps. An interview is also your opportunity to determine whether the actual role matches the posting.
